Pizza Volante

Determined to find a diamond in the rough, Danna and I looked for Pizza Volante. A lot of people gave it good reviews and I was excited to stuff my face with whatever they had to offer. Pizza Volante is located in Session Road at the right side going to SM Baguio. It has an open face entrance and a 2nd floor that seems to share its space with an office. We didn't have to wait for a table as it was too early for lunch. Despite that, the queue began to fill shortly after sitting down.

I ordered a six inch Chili con carne pizza. It was topped with mozzarella cheese, onions and chili con carne (of course). The chili kicked my ass and I was sweating the whole time. The place deserved all of its glowing commendations.

Danna ordered a Bolognese pizza. It was topped with mozzarella cheese, spaghetti sauce with a hint of wine and a healthy serving of beef. I wish we found this place earlier.

Of course an extra helping of fries is called for. It was baked well with the skin still on. It was cut not too thin as to remind you of fast food and not too thick as to produce that starchy feel in your mouth. Overall, it was worth looking.

We would definitely eat here again if fate brings us back to Baguio. If not, we can always take time off and go back.

The 50's Diner

As an avid food blog reader, I've come across this Diner's name that's supposedly the best in Baguio. Since we're around town, I figured I'd swing by and sample the food. The 50's Diner is located near the Carmelite Sisters in Baguio (or more commonly known as the "Pink Sisters"). Sadly enough, the food was inevitably forgettable. The ambiance certainly reflected the name but unfortunately, not the food.

I ordered a platter combo (I forgot the name) that included one piece of pork chop, spaghetti, garlic bread, veggies, pizza, chicken and a choice of either rice or fries. I went with the fries trying to keep up with the whole Machete diet facade. The pork chop was poorly seasoned and tasted like it was taken out of the freezer, pan fried and cooked well done. I know this because I've done it many times and this is exactly how it tasted. The spaghetti was too sweet and reminded me of a Jollibee meal along with the chicken. Yes, the chicken tasted like a Jollibee chicken joy. The veggies was your typical buttered corn, carrots and beans which tasted like they have been sitting in a plate for a while. The sitaw was getting dark around the edges and the carrots looked old too. The fries were tolerable, baked and a little too soggy for my taste. The pizza tasted exactly like the ones you buy in the streets peddled using a bike and to put the icing on the top of this horrible meal was a non-crunchy garlic bread that used margarine instead of butter.

Meanwhile, Danna ordered a Tempura meal which didn't register any taste at all. The batter pretty much consisted 80% of the meal and the Tempura sauce was comparable to a thick Salabat that lack sugar and actual ginger. The prawns made my tongue itchy which would indicate that it's not so fresh.

I regret having to spend close to 500 php for this meal. I hope I never have to again. It was very disappointing considering the price and the wait (yes, there was a line!). The staff were so busy, we had to ask twice for everything apart from the bill. In an unrelated note, wearing a 50's Diner uniform in pink must be cool. You get to call people "dollface" with a raspy cigarette-damaged voice.

Papa Johns

In our efforts to stay dynamic with our food choices, I've finally persuaded Danna to eat at Papa John's. Located at Robinson's Galleria Edsa. Their place is in the new Veranda section of the mall. To say that the pizza tasted good would be an understatement. It tasted so good, we forgot to take a picture of it before it was dismantled into oblivion. The crust was done perfectly. It's not too thick, not too thin and it was crunchy and flavorful. The meat toppings were surprisingly noticeable in taste and the cheese was not too plentiful as to obscure the taste of the other ingredients. The pizza also came with a sauce (okay, it was melted butter. Bite me!) that gave the pizza a savory flavor. If you prefer something less buttery, Tabasco sauce and ketchup would go nicely with this dish. The menu includes pasta dishes (which we will try out the next time) and a good choice of beverage ranging from juices to refillable sodas.

To top off the the meal was a gorgeous desert picked out by Danna. I think it was a toffee sans rival kind of thing. It's an unusual combination but it worked pretty well. The blueberry cheesecake is on top of the desert menu. Just the way I like it.

The staff was very attentive and we never had to raise a hand or so much as a nod for them to take the hint. The price is not as expensive as your regular Yellow Cab bill would dish out so it was all in all a very good experience.

I must remember to take more pictures before we pig out or the whole point of this blog is moot.
